Freightliner Trucks is a subsidiary of Daimler Truck, a US-based manufacturer of commercial and luxury vehicles. The company was founded in 1942 as Freightliner Corporation, with its origins tracing back to Consolidated Freightways in the 1930s. Freightliner produces a range of vans, medium-duty trucks, and heavy-duty trucks, including bare and cutaway chassis. The company is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, where it was founded, and operates manufacturing facilities in Cleveland and Mount Holly, North Carolina, and Santiago Tianguistenco and Saltillo, Mexico.
In December 2020, Freightliner was fined $30 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for failing to recall known safety defects in its vehicles. As of May 2021, the company has at least three open investigations for electrical issues, including several fires. In response, Freightliner appointed John O’Leary, a senior executive from Mercedes Benz Trucks and former CFO of Daimler Trucks, as CEO.
