Kaman Corporation is an American company with headquarters located in Bloomfield, Connecticut. It was founded in December of 1945 by Charles Kaman, who originally intended for the company to focus solely on designing and manufacturing helicopters that held many aviation firsts and set world records. However, in 1956, Kaman Corporation diversified their operations and began working as an aerospace subcontractor for McDonnell Douglas, Grumman, and other companies.
In the mid-1960s, Kaman Corporation further diversified outside of the aerospace industry and leveraged their expertise in composite materials to create the round-backed, composite-body Ovation guitar. This led to the establishment of Kaman Music, which was an independent distributor of musical instruments and accessories, as well as a major producer of guitars and guitar parts.
Today, Kaman Corporation serves multiple industries including aerospace, medical, and defense. The company operates in 241 offices and 5 distribution facilities worldwide. The current Chairman, President, and CEO is Ian K. Walsh. As of FY 2012, the company had a revenue of US$1.59 billion, operating income of US$92.8 million, and a net income of US$55.0 million. The company employs approximately 5,007 people and has several divisions providing specialized engineering products and services.
