The Robinson Helicopter Company is an aerospace manufacturer based in Torrance, California, specializing in the production of civilian helicopters. Founded in 1973 by Frank D. Robinson, a former employee of Bell Helicopter and Hughes Helicopters, the company has produced over 12,000 aircraft since delivering its first helicopter in 1979. Robinson Helicopter produces three models, including the two-seat R22 and the four-seat R44, which both use Lycoming piston engines, and the five-seat R66, powered by a Rolls-Royce RR300 gas turbine engine. In addition to its helicopter products, Robinson also produces the Robinson Helipad, a modular helipad designed for light helicopters.
While Robinson helicopters have a history of mast bumping incidents, the company has patented a triple-hinged rotor assembly teetering atop an extended mast design for their main rotor. According to a 2018 article in the Los Angeles Times, Robinson helicopters seem to have an increased susceptibility to mast-bumping incidents. However, the company remains a leader in the global market, having sold 523 light helicopters in 2013 and producing up to 1,000 helicopters per year at its factory. With Kurt Robinson serving as president and chairman, the company is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in June 2023.
