The company was established in 1911 through the merger of Södertälje-based Vabis and Malmö-based Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania. Today, Scania has production facilities in multiple countries across the globe and an extensive network of sales and service organizations and finance companies. Scania is a subsidiary of Traton, which is part of the Volkswagen Group. The company is known for its griffin logo, which is from the coat of arms of the province of Scania (Swedish: Skåne).
